Gypsy Moths (Spongy Moth) and Lanternfly

AWPOA Community,

Good evening and there have been multiple posts and pictures about the Gypsy Moths. This update is to address the concerns and what the BoD’s next steps are for 2023-2024.

We’ve received feedback from owners that want mass spraying and feedback from owners that do not want mass spraying due to animals, plants, etc. We are filling out the application now for this year’s survey and it will be an agenda item to vote on at this year’s Owner’s Meeting.

As previously noted from WV DNR/DOA, Gypsy Moth (Spongy Moth) will not destroy trees, unlike the Lanternfly. Trees will return the following year as has happened in the past. Pertaining to Lanternfly, WV DNR/DOA has traps in the community due to the fact that they will kill the trees and are tracking results.

We are asking WV DNR/DOA to be present at the Owner’s Meeting to address the community and questions.

Optional, each property owner can contact various organizations who will come out and spray on an individual basis.

Lastly, the BoD will not make a universal decision to spray chemicals across the entire community and be liable for pets, livestock, plants, crops, etc. that may be affected, but will be submitted for a vote as previously stated.

Thank you and have a great evening!

Regards,

Jason T. Williams
AWPOA President
