Hazards

On our property today, lot 119 my son and I are enjoying some deer hunting. About 11am someone was walking along Ashton woods road, no problem with that, but this time of year you should wear orange while walking around! Second around noon a pickup stopped, backed up, and fired out of the window. Two guys jumped out heard one say I hit him. I yelled that there was someone below the road and they jumped back in the truck and took off. Just because there isn’t a house doesn’t mean someone isn’t in the woods.

Pretty sure the AW rules sign at the entrance (TV, anyway) clearly states no road hunting.

If they were not owners, how did they get into Ashton Woods? If they were owners, the license plate number would have been helpful.

People wait all the time for someone to open the gate then they follow in. This has happened to me more than once. Not long ago an unmarked white van with a ladder on top followed me in. The occupant did not look trustworthy to me. I have witnessed people trying to get a code to work and can’t and then they back up and follow in. I don’t know what the answer is to this situation.

Jason, I know you know this, but I’ll state it for general information for the viewers.

This issue is not new. We’ve owned our lots for 13 years, and it has gone on every year. The issue is that the codes are given out. The electric company knows the code (unless they have a special key fob now, they didn’t then). There are contractor codes. There are owners who share the code with friends. Codes get out, and while I like the gates and it’s the reason I bought here to cut down on unrestricted drive-by cars, it’s not and end to all unauthorized access.

I’m not sure there is a cure without a gate house, but that’s unrealistic. Maybe provide everyone who is not an owner a pass card or fob, and no one but owners get codes? But even then, codes will get into the wild. So is the answer no more codes?

I don’t know the answer and there may not be one. But codes aren’t working.

During firearms season we definitely wear orange outside, even on our own property. We put orange on our dogs too, Especially our lab/greyhound mix who looks like a small deer. We enjoy hunting up here as well as back home so we are glad to be able to hunt and shoot. I am sure most peeps are law abiding citizens while hunting, but I have heard too many “close call” stories to not wear orange while too far away from the cabin during firearms. Good luck to all the fellow hunters!

Was this the truck? He came in my drive like he owned the place back in June. Not to far from your lot.

I’m a little late to the conversation here but I’ve often wondered why the gates stay open so long. Three or four cars can easily get through the gate at a time…. Can we shorten the gate open time to help force people who are trying to “piggy back” to have to put in a code?

    • Tim Schafer, just4schaf@aol.com says:

Matt, I currently have the gates set at 20 seconds open time. It can be decreased to a lesser amount. The reason i gave it such a long open time is because we have a large amount of construction trucks coming in. Say a Cement truck comes to the gate, he has to climb down several steps , walk to the key pad, then repeat all that, release his park brake, get into gear and go. Well, sometimes the gate starts to close before he is on the saftey loops and could easily cause damage to the gate.
When anyone drives in, the safety loops (there are 3) keep the gat from coming down on very slow moving vehicles. Unauthorized vehicles following others in, will be on the safety loop within 3-4 seconds. The Gate close time would have to be reduced to 2-3 seconds to stop this. That would be a safety hazard in my opinion. Its up to Jason, the new President to make the call on a lesser open time.
      Tim
