Nathaniel Mountain WMA Access

Nathaniel Mountain WMA Access

Hello all, we are new AW residents and excited to join the community. This past weekend we attempted to find a vehicle access point to enter the Nathaniel Mountain WMA from AW but were unsuccessful. Every logical entrance (based on map recon) along S Branch Mountain Road was either gated or barriered. Can someone talk us onto the right location for vehicle access, perhaps attach (or email conland1@gmail.com) a map screenshot with the location? Thanks in advance.

Regards,
David

    David,

    Good evening!

Access is blocked into Ashton Woods from the WMA to mitigate the public from coming into the community.

There are places to park and walk in, but driving access into the WMA is not accessible.

Please note that if you are going into the WMA, that Orange should be worn as it’s hunting season.

One month ago, I used Google map by setting the GPS destination to my land (339) which is close to Nathaniel Mountain WMA. Google showed the road via Nathaniel Mountain WMA to my land. I followed Google, which is WRONG!!
The road was horrible and the gate between Ashton Woods and Nathaniel Mountain WMA was blocked.

As far as I know, there are 3 entrances.
    1. From route 48, take the Ashton Woods Dr. exit which is near Clifford Hollow Overlook
    2. Cunningham ln and then Trough Rd, enter through West gate
    3. Cunningham ln and then Trough Rd, enter through view gate

Depending on the location of your land, you can choose any entrance.
2 and 3 are very close.

You can find a map from this site: Owners area/Document/community map

Off topic, sort of, but when I tell people how to drive in from the east I tell them do NOT use the GPS until you get to east Moorefield exit on corridor H, else it will try to bring you into on roads that don’t exit… or maybe they exist, but don’t try.

They do exist and they take you to the gate off Nathaniel Mountain Road which is locked. We always tell people to GPS to Walmart and then put in our address or they will end up driving up those roads and they are not easy and then you get stopped at a gate you can’t access.

  4. You can access the WMA by vehicle off from Mount Olive Road and drove up to the gate at Ashton Woods. Not a bad road, but I would not attempt it in a car. Truck or SUV needed. You take the North River Road Exit off the 4 lane. Left onto Mt. Olive Road. You have to watch for the sign. If you are driving along side the power line right of way you passed the turn off. First mile or so I a road through private property. No ATVs or side by sides allowed.
