Road Conditions Update Please

Road Conditions Update Please

Good afternoon AW neighbors,
I am hoping to get an update on roads on South Branch Mountain Rd towards the top. We are planning to come up tomorrow and just want to be prepared.

Thank you

We rode our side x side to the top and wound back down Nathaniel Mtn Rd on Wednesday evening and there was a LOT of ice, but we had no problems just going slow and being sensible. There is a lot of melting happening today, the temps are in the high 50’s so I’m sure it’s much better today as far as ice, the slush is thick in the low-sun spots on the roads. If you have 4WD you should be fine if you’re driving sensibly.

The road is fine as long as you have AWD. A bit slushy with some soft ice. As long as you stay out of the obvious icy tracks, you’re fine. We are at the top of South Branch.

Obviously, if it freezes, that’s an entirely different situation.

We attempted to go up yesterday, but our non-4WD truck would not make it up our driveway on Winterberry drive.

The main roads were fine, but our driveway was pure ice. It may be better today with temperatures rising. Our driveway has lots of trees surrounding it, so sunlight doesn’t hit it much.

    Hello Helia!

I have photos (I can’t figure out how to share in this comment) which I can text you showing the last stretch up to South Branch Mtn Rd is still pretty icy.

Mark drove our Chevy Silverado 2500 with a large round bale of hay in the back for weight and still fish tailed when going up/down today.

If you have a structure with plumbing, it may be worth the risk because we didn’t have power twice and at one point; it was out for two days straight during the below zero temperatures this week.

Thanks goodness our neighbors, Kevin and Gene, were on the mountain and realized how dangerous the road conditions and the loss of power was going to impact our home and immediately jumped in the assist. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts guys!!

When Mark arrived and warmed the house back up using the pellet stove (house was at 29 degrees) our damage was a cracked seal on a water filtration tank and the heat pump had lost its programming. Could have been worse and pipes could have burst.

Good luck, but if you don’t have anything which could be damaged due to the freeze; I would wait until the road was better.
